Curriculum Adviser
An experienced teacher and writing specialist to oversee our writing curriculum, lead our moderators on quality, and make sure the feedback students receive is accurate, useful and worth acting on.
The role
We’re looking for an experienced teacher and writing specialist with a sharp eye for detail to join our Product team. You’ll oversee the development and ongoing improvement of our writing curriculum, lead our team of moderators on quality, and help make sure the feedback students receive is accurate, useful, and worth acting on.
This is a hands-on, process-heavy role. You’ll spend much of your time immersed in student writing: checking assessment decisions, unpicking tricky examples, refining criteria, and making sure our standards hold up in practice. But you’ll also need to see the whole picture—both the overview of the curriculum itself, and how it manifests in this new application powered by expertly harnessed AI models.
Our moderators do two jobs: they proofread AI-generated feedback and write their own, and they mark student writing by hand against the same marking policy we give the AI. You’ll set the standard for both. You need to know your grammar, care about the difference between a plausible comment and genuinely good feedback, and take pride in getting the details right. This isn’t a role where you write the guidance and leave someone else to check the work.
You’ll bring classroom expertise to the challenge of getting AI to assess writing well. That means being open to what the technology can do, clear-eyed about where it falls short, and willing to work through the detail to make it better. Alongside our Product and Schools teams, you’ll help ensure we assess the right things, reflect how writing develops, and deliver work that teachers and students can trust.
What you’ll do
From day one
Oversee our writing assessment curriculum and the quality of feedback returned to students
Manage, support, and motivate our team of moderators — giving clear direction, resolving questions, and keeping assessment standards consistent (Contracts, scheduling, and invoicing sit with our operations team)
Compare AI and human marking against the same policy, identifying where criteria aren’t performing as they should and following through on improvements
Review written feedback for accuracy, clarity, and usefulness — not just whether it sounds convincing
Map our assessment criteria to schools’ existing curriculum and assessment frameworks, taking care over the detail rather than forcing a fit
Work closely with the Schools team to support the accurate, timely processing and delivery of student work
As you grow
Deepen and refine our assessment spine — the criteria and progression that underpin our assessments — so we’re assessing the right things in the right place
Turn recurring assessment errors and moderation disagreements into clearer guidance and better assessment decisions
Help moderators strengthen their practice through constructive feedback, shared examples, and support
Respond to the needs of students and schools, and to developments in the national curriculum
Shape the product teachers and students actually see: help decide how our teacher tool works, and how reports and feedback are structured so they’re clear, useful, and easy to act on
Improve how we work — we want you to make our assessment and moderation processes better, not just keep them running
Who you are
Essential
Strong classroom teaching experience in English, with particular expertise in teaching and assessing writing. A primary background is preferred; we’ll also consider secondary English teachers with strong knowledge of the primary national curriculum
Excellent knowledge of grammar and how writing develops — with the ability to explain your judgements clearly
A high bar for written feedback: you know the difference between identifying an error and helping a student understand what to do next
Genuinely excellent attention to detail — the kind of person who notices when a comment doesn’t quite match the writing, or a criterion leaves room for inconsistent judgements
Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage your own workload, coordinate others, and meet deadlines
Clear, professional communication, with the ability to give constructive feedback and keep moderators motivated
Comfortable with technology and structured technical processes, and quick to pick up new tools
Self-starting and proactive, but with the judgement to ask for help rather than guess when you’re unsure
A genuine interest in education and edtech, a passion for good writing, and an openness to the challenge of getting AI assessment right
Desirable
Experience training, mentoring, or upskilling others, particularly around formative assessment and written feedback
Experience leading or coordinating writing moderation
Experience developing assessment criteria or mapping curriculum frameworks
Experience contributing to edtech product design, or working with developers or designers
What we offer
A full-time role at one of the UK’s fastest-growing edtech companies, with the potential for a permanent contract at the end of the maternity cover period
Real responsibility from day one
The opportunity to make a demonstrable difference to schools’ writing outcomes, and in turn to children’s life chances
Structured training and ongoing mentoring
A team that’s small enough that your work visibly matters
Hybrid working from our London office. Remote work will be considered for the right candidate, but you would need to be willing to travel to the London office at least once per month.
About stylus
It all starts with a page of writing. A Year 5 explaining how to look after a hamster. A Year 7 describing their first week of secondary school. Every week, teachers carry home piles of books like these, and every week there’s too little time to do them justice.
stylus was founded by former teachers to change that. We’re a marking service, not another tool for teachers to run. Pupils write on paper, as they always have: no logins, no laptops, no training. Teachers scan the work. We do the rest, and we answer for its quality.
We read every sentence against every criterion, because a grade is a single block of colour and we want the whole picture. That detail lets us find the one thing holding each pupil back, and group the pupils who share it, so teachers know what to teach tomorrow, and to whom.
None of this works without expert teachers. They marked everything by hand before we automated a thing, and the model is still checked against them: every disagreement reviewed, every piece of guidance rewritten until it holds. We went slow to go fast. Nothing reaches a teacher unchecked.
We take the marking, never the judgement. The AI can’t enjoy the writing; teachers should. Endorsed by the Department for Education and used in schools across the country, stylus exists to give every teacher the insight required to meet each student’s needs, without stealing time from their weekends and evenings.
That’s where you come in.
